Refracting telescope by John Marshall, London, c.1715
Marshall was one of London's leading optical instrument makers, best known now for his compound microscopes. A customer who visited his shop in 1710 recorded that Marshall had had his name painted in white on the roof of a distant building, for customers to assure themselves of the performance of his telescopes.
