The variety of dials

It is almost impossible to do justice to the sheer range of sundial designs. Apart from plane surfaces, the hour lines can be arranged inside a bowl [1, 2], or on the outside of a globe [4]. Stone was common for monumental dials, and brass, wood and ivory for portable. Stone was also occasionally used for portable instruments, whether crudely marked [3], or delicately picked out in relief [5].
