Route measurement

Rolling a wheel along a road and counting the revolutions gives a measure of distance travelled. Waywisers [1] do this directly, while map measurers do so in miniature [3]. [2] is the dial of a rugged waywiser specially devised for use in India. Rather than rolling on the road surface [4] could be mounted on the hub of a carriage wheel. Instead of revolutions, a pedometer [5] counts paces by being attached to a walker's leg.
