Gilt brass and silver; compass card printed from an engraved plate and coloured by hand. Signed, "T W Fecit 1602".

On the top of the hinged cover is a lunar volvelle for showing the phases of the moon, and for converting readings made by moonlight to solar time.

On the bottom of the instrument is a nocturnal.
