German nocturnals

Nocturnals are for finding the time from the orientation of the night sky and as such are quite often combined with a sundial, such as a diptych dial [6] for daytime use. Two very similar 16th-century instruments in this group, by Ulrich Schniep [3] and Casper Vopel [5], combine a nocturnal with a Regiomontanus-type sundial.
