Degree scales

In the article in Sphaera 10 on the 1653 uncropped Sutton circumferentor dial (inv 60120) it is noted that Sutton may have refined the earlier 120 'degree' surveying circle into a 240 'degree' version before finally eliminating this alternative to leave only the astronomers' 360 degree circle.

The W.R. example follows the later Sutton dial design in being printed from a plate with the circle in 360 degrees and having a central calendar-declination scale. However, it is very striking that the earlier use of surveying 'degrees' seems to have been reinstated, because outside the printed 360 degree circle there is a manuscript circle of 120 degrees.
