Brief Description: Gilt brass disc with Italian [or Bohemian] hour-lines on both sides and a swivelling magnetic compass that can be used for either side. One side of the disc is for latitude 42°; the other for latitude 45°. Around the edge of each side are engraved the names of the winds associated with the point of the compass; in Italian on one side and in Latin on the other. The case is of pasteboard with gold-tooled leather and lined with silk.
Primary Inscriptions: "Romae Anno dni 1585" [Instrument similar to 46744 inscribed "Romae anno 1588. Unsigned but possibly by Carlo Plato of Rome].
