Brief Description: | Albumen print mounted on card, cut down (probably from cabinet format) to carte de visite size in order to fit into an album. Portrait of A. G. Vernon Harcourt, half length, turned slightly to left but looking front. The chemist Augustus George Vernon Harcourt (1834-1919) was a pioneer of research in chemical kinetics and a very influential teacher in Oxford between the 1860s and 1900s. One of his many distinguished pupils N. V. Sidgwick (1873-1952), who owned the photograph, has written late in life an identifying inscription on the back, continuing: 'my tutor in Chemistry He made me his Demon-strator in my Second year at Oxford'. | ||||||||||
