Brief Description: Cylinder electrostatic machine with case and associated parts, by Edward Nairne, London, c. 1760. Object consists of 27 parts: the electrostatic machine, which has a large glass cylinder rounded at both ends and with both ends painted red. It also has a copper alloy box with two control knobs that is clamped to a wooden frame; a glass jar that is primarily painted silver, has a top that is painted red and has a spout with a copper alloy ball that has a hook on top; a glass tube with rounded copper alloy coverings at both ends; a varnished dark brown circular stand; a metal ring and six-pointed star-shaped where component with sharp ends that are bent at right angles; an instrument composed of a thin copper alloy bar with a large hook, attached are two bells on chains and two beads on threads of the same length as the chains; an accessory that consists of a curved copper alloy strip with a two-pronged fork at one end and attached at the other end to a wooden block that has a black fabric sheet attached to one side of it and red leather on the other side; a metal rod with a smaller shorter rod protruding from one side and ten sharp spikes on the other side; a large thin copper alloy disc; a smaller copper alloy disc with a chain attached to the middle; an oval-shaped bolsa wood box with a lid that detaches and is labelled "Pith balls"; a set of different coloured pith balls, four of which are attached to a length of thread;  also with the small box are five miniature wooden carved dolls, known as 'worry dolls'. Four of them are hand-painted and one is plain. The tallest of the dolls is bald and has a white and pink shirt with buttons and blue shorts. The second tallest has blue trousers with a red stripe, a red top with a white shirt with a tie underneath and a red cone-shaped clown hat. The middle-sized doll has a yellow dress with a red ribbon round her waist and rosy cheeks. The second smallest has red trousers and a blue top. The smallest doll is just a male head with a moustache and a trilby hat, on a short pillar-shaped plinth; a copper alloy shaft that is enlarged at one end and has a vase-shaped edge on one side and a handle at the other end; a copper alloy cylinder that separates in the middle and is attached to small copper alloy shaft and chain; a wooden rod with a ball-shaped tip at one end and smaller copper alloy tip at the other; wooden divider that sits in the box and has spaces that hold a thin metal rod that is bent/curved at almost a right angle and two thin metal rods with curved sections and two spikes; a smaller wooden box divider; wooden box divider with two curved indents and two square tips; wooden box divider with three curved indents and two square tips; a bell and a separate copper alloy chain; a red-painted glass rod with a rounded wooden attachment at one end; a copper alloy tube with a central hole and enlarged cylindrical fittings at both ends, one of which detaches. Also present are a candle, a bar of soap and a wooden plate that was found at the bottom of the box. The case is a large wooden box with a hinged lid.
