Inventory Number: 31601
Object Type:
Persons: William Henry Fox Talbot (Photographer)
Date Created: July 30, 1842
Brief Description: Calotype (salted paper print from a calotype negative) showing a view of the Botanic Garden, Oxford, with glasshouses, Danby Gate, and keeper's residence, and parts of the garden and urns in the foreground. Framed and glazed, with label on backing board inscribed in Talbot's hand, indicating that it was framed by him or under his supervision. The photograph is sepia, of fairly even tone all over, with darker brown border; there are large water stains, slightly pinkish and bluish in the image and darker in the border, including a grey-black stain at bottom right. Plain back. The paper is about 7¼ by 8¾ inches, and has a full 'J Whatman | Turkey Mill | 1840' watermark. The frame is wood with maple veneer on front, ebony inset, no nails to the backing board, which is warped; the edges of the frame are painted yellow. Two holes in the top edge presumably indicate the original hanging hook; the screws and wire are not original. The inside of the backing board is painted black, with marks where it has been water damaged and has adhered to the photograph, which is the cause of the staining on the photograph. Companion to 37304.
