Brief Description: Daguerreotype portrait of Michael Faraday, seated half length, facing front, his left arm resting on a table. Plain backdrop with real curtain to right. Oval gilt mat with decorated inner edge (no frame).
Removed from broken cover-glass and re-packaged under replacement glass in 1988. Case now kept separately (Inv.11962). The image is air-deteriorated, and sepia coloured in the oval exposed area, with extensive scratches over the image surface; together with an inscription written or scratched across the left side reading 'Claudet Houghton'. Perhaps it was on the plate before exposure and the photographer accidentally omitted to polish it away. George Houghton was the photographer Antoine Claudet's business partner, originally as glass merchants before the invention of the daguerreotype, when they became photographers and photographic suppliers. Faraday and Claudet were well acquainted, and Claudet is known to have photographer Faraday.
Primary Inscriptions: Inscribed on front, over or under image: 'Claudet | Houghton'.
Provenance: Purchased from R. S. Clay in 1944. Part of the Clay Collection.
