Brief Description: | English worm-jack. Brass, and steel, with silvered brass dials. Unsigned and undated, but possibly by John Rowley, c.1700. A worm-jack, driven by a falling weight, may be used to move anything requiring a rotary motion, e.g. the roasting of an animal on a spit. This carefully constructed instrument was probably intended for scientific purposes, and may have been used by Lord Orrery for driving astronomical models. Includes one lead weight, presumably the survivor of the three mentioned in the 1731 inventory. | ||||||||||
