Brief Description: Gaston Tissandier, A History and Handbook of Photography Translated from the French of Gaston Tissandier Edited by J. Thomson, F.R.G.S. ..., Second and revised edition with an appendix by the late Henry Fox Talbot (London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, & Rivington, 1878). Bound in red cloth, damp stained, with vignette of hands pouring chemical on to a plate. Flyleaf + xx pages + 400 pages + 16 pages of advertisements for photographic materials and apparatus + 24-page publisher's catalogue + flyleaf, + frontispiece with tissue + 20 plates. Advertising endpapers.

Two of the plates are real photographs mounted on card, as follows. Frontispiece, captioned 'Frederick Leighton, R.A. | Printed by the Woodbury Permanent Process, | From a Negative by Lock and Whitfield.', head and shoulders in profile facing left, rich brown colour. Plate facing p.338, captioned 'Specimen of Permanent Print | by Messrs. Strumper & Co., Hamburg.', showing a waterfall falling over ruins of a building, a somewhat glossy print mounted on stiff card, resembling a woodburytype or carbon print but softer brown; the text calls the process 'the Lichtdruck process' and it is based on bichromated gelatine. The plate facing p.342, printed by Alfred Pumphrey's 'permanent ink process', is of photographic or photogravure quality, but under a lens has a grain similar to collotype.
