Inventory Number: 12102
Object Type:
Persons: Frederic Jones (Photographer)
Giuseppe Garibaldi (Subject)
Date Created:
Place Created: London England United Kingdom Europe
Brief Description: Oval albumen print mounted on card, a variant of the normal carte de visite (less tall and slightly wider). Portrait of Garibaldi, standing half length, turned and looking to left, holding his hat in his right hand and with a monocle hanging from a chain around his neck; vignetted. The photographer's advertisement is interesting for the term 'Album Portraits', which was the original English name for cartes de visite. This and the variant format suggest an early date (which would therefore be 1860, when Garibaldi shot to fame); however, if Frederic Jones genuinely took the photograph it would more probably be in 1864 when Galibaldi visited London. Primary Inscriptions: Printed photographer's details on back of mount: 'Patronized by H.M. the Queen. | Album [royal arms] Portraits, | Photographed by | Fredc. Jones, | 146. Oxford Street | London.'. Also identifying inscription on back.
