English 12-FOOT REFRACTOR TELESCOPE
c.1690

Pasteboard tubes covered with white vellum tooled in gold; lignum vitae mount for the eye-piece, the objective lens and mount are missing. Unsigned and undated. The tooling motifs are characteristic of the Restoration period.

The Orrery telescopes are particularly interesting historically because they represent the instruments of the time of the first Astronomer Royal, John Flamsteed (1646-1719), whose own instruments have not survived.
