German ASTRONOMICAL COMPENDIUM
Second half of the 16th century.

Gilt and silvered brass. Signed, ". C S." [=Christoph Schissler]; undated.

Includes:
1. A volvelle for converting ordinary hours into Italian or planetary hours (or vice-versa), with a calendar of the days of the week and the ruling planets.

2. A lunar volvelle and aspectarium.

3. An inclining dial, originally adjustable for latitudes c.43°-60°, but the folding latitude-scale is now missing. Through a hole in the dial-plate is visible:
4. A compass. Around the compass is a wind-rose engraved with the Italian names of the winds.

The ornamentation on this instrument was etched by acid.
