Italian POLYHEDRAL DIAL and SCAPHE
?c. 1600

Painted wood and brass. Unsigned and undated.

On the top of the lid are a horizontal pin-gnomon dial for Italian, Babylonian and Jewish hours, a compass within a wind-rose marked with the initial letters of the Italian names of the winds, and the motto, "FUGIT VEL[VT] VMBRA".

Around the edge of the lid are the Italian names of the winds, "TRAMONT', GRECO, EVRO, SIROCCO, OSTRO, GARBINO, ZEFFIRO, MAESTRO".

Underneath the lid are two vertical pin-gnomon dials for Italian hours, marked with lines showing the declination of the Sun.

Inside the block is a scaphe for Italian hours, with the motto, "QVID LVCIDIVS SOLE ET HIC DIFICIET ECCL 17."
On seven of the sides of the block are vertical pin-gnomon dials for Italian hours. The sides are decorated with pictures, and with the following mottoes on scrolls:
"OBTENEBRABITVR IN ORTV SVO Isa. 13."
"ORITVR ET OCCIDIT Eccl. 1."
"OCCIDET IN MERIDIE: Amos 8."
"VAE NOBIS QVIA DECLINAT. Hier. 6."
A moulding that surrounded the base of the block is missing.

Inside the hollowed out base is an incomplete MS calendar volvelle giving times of sunrise midday and midnight and the position of the Sun in the Zodiac.
