Making and faking

Are instruments always original and authentic? The maker's name cannot necessarily be trusted. A famous maker's name might be "borrowed" to add value to an otherwise undistinguished object: compare the quality of an original [1] with two imitations claiming to be by the Paris maker Butterfield [2, 3]. Fake astrolabes are still produced for the tourist market [4].
