An Astrolabe for the Weather

Smaller in scale than the Islamic astrolabe above, and certainly less visually spectacular, this German astrolabe (right) also includes the 28 lunar mansions. They appear between the outer zodiac circle and the inner circle of months. Their weather relevance is apparent from their abbreviated descriptions as 'dry', 'temperate', 'humid', and so on.

Within the central circle are the date and the maker: '1490' and 'h T b', with the T inside a triangle. This is the mark of Hans Bamman: 'Hans Bamman of Thuringia'.
