Part of a German astrolabe

Only the mater of this astrolabe survives and the back is shown, where one obvious feature is the way the inner scale of dates is off centre. The dates correspond to the positions of the sun in the zodiac on the outermost scale and the eccentricity reflects the variation in the sun's apparent progress along the ecliptic throughout the year.
