European universal astrolabes

Universal astrolabes are designed to be used at any latitude. Several different versions exist. The De Rojas type is named after the author of the first book describing its construction, published in 1551. [1] dates from the year of publication and almost exactly matches the book's engraving. Inside the mater of [2] is an earlier type using a different projection. Borrowed from Islamic sources, it was known as the "saphaea arzachelis" in medieval Europe.
