German EQUINOCTIAL DIAL
early 18th century

Ivory, silver, and gilt and silvered brass; not signed or dated. The pointer on the small circular scale is set to the correct latitude and the small catch depressed, causing the hour-ring to spring up to the appropriate angle. The gnomon is weighted so that it automatically adjusts itself at right-angles to the plane of the hour-ring. To leave room for the spring mechanism the 'southern half' of the compass-needle is replaced by a counter-balance weight near the pivot.
