Ingenious devices

Mathematicians and designers enjoyed the challenge of arranging sundials on all sorts of surfaces and geometrical solids. The octahedron [1] is one of the Platonic solids analysed in Euclid's Elements of Geometry, while the star in [2] was probably chosen more for its aesthetic than mathematical qualities. A crucifix sundial [3] not only told the time but reminded a Christian of eternal truths.
