Historical Background - Inv. Num. 72143

This coherer was probably used in transmission tests from South Foreland station, Dover to the East Goodwin lighthship - one of the earlier ship-to-shore transmission tests. These tests were performed between December 1898 and February. Despite significant successes, Trinity House (for whom the tests had been performed) decided not to adopt this means of transmission for ship-to-shore communication.
