German HORIZONTAL DIAL
16th century

Gilt copper and silver; the wooden base is modern. Unsigned and undated, but possibly by Christoph Schissler, who made three similar dials with different figures.

In addition to the hour-lines, there are lines showing the sun's declination throughout the year, sunrise and sunset, the length of day and night and planetary hours. There are two volvelles, one a lunar volvelle and aspectarium the other indicating the succession of planetary hours for each day of the week.

Formerly in the Michel Collection.
