French NOCTURNAL and VERTICAL DISC DIAL
?16th century

Gilt brass; with original leather case. Unsigned; perhaps dated 1591, if not 1617.

On the index-arm of the nocturnal are a small compass and a horizontal dial. The phases of the moon are shown through a circular hole near the centre of the index-arm.

On the back is a vertical disc dial; in its centre a volvelle giving for each month of the year, "... LES IOVRS HER{EV circumflex}" and "... LES IOVRS PERIL{EV circumflex}".
