Wood

Early wooden instruments do not survive as well as their metal counterparts. Intended for the lower end of the market they were typically considered less attractive and valuable by both owners and collectors. Among the many types of wood to be used, boxwood was a particular favourite of English makers of scales and slide rules [2]. Pear wood was used for nocturnals [3].
