Inventory no. 36488 - Former Display Label

18th century

Pear wood and brass. Unsigned and undated.

This nocturnal is made for use with either two stars of the Great Bear (the 'Pointers') or one of the Little Bear ({??} Ursae minoris); there are two indices on the smaller disc, marked 'GB' and 'LB', enabling the observer to set the disc for either constellation. Most nocturnals are made for use with only one of these. The smaller disc has a lunar scale in addition to the usual hour scale.

The instrument is similar to no. 268 (also shown in this case) and is probably by the same maker.
