Inv. 47759 - context of donation

Patricia Kell's Sphaera article on the lodestone surmises or implies that the Countess may have wished to withhold her name from the donation to protect her husband's name - in case it was thought that his election as university Chancellor was in some way due to the donation. However, according to the Oxford DNB article on John Fane, seventh earl of Westmorland (1686-1762), he only became Chancellor in 1759, 3 years after the lodestone came to the Ashmolean. Quite where the inaccuracy lies isn't yet clear, but it needs some further examination.
