English EQUINOCTIAL RING DIAL
c.1660

Signed 'Ralph Greatorex fecit. Londi'. Brass. Diameter 90 mm.

It has the latitudes of 25 English and continental towns, but beginning (instead of London) with 'Woborn' (Woburn, Bedfordshire), indicating that the instrument was made for the Duke of Bedford, of Woburn Abbey.

The technical and design features are the same as those of Elias Allen's equinoctial ring dials, displayed nearby. Ralph Greatorex was his pupil and successor. He was a well-known figure in London scientific circles in the 1650s and 1660s, but very few items made by him survive.

This sundial was formerly in the collection of Wisbech and Fenland Museum.
