On a larger scale

The bigger an instrument, the larger are its scales and the greater the possibility of precision. Both of these large dials are equinoctial, that is, with the hour ring parallel to the equator. [1] is for a fixed latitude but [2] is universal, and is also equipped to check the accuracy of clocks and watches. On its horizontal circle there is a scale which shows the adjustment needed when converting between the sundial's local solar time and the uniform mechanical time of a watch.
