Brief Description: | This astrolabe is a fine example of a how Persian astrolabe design was adopted and adapted in Mughal India. The scroll work on the throne is very close to that of some Persian astrolabes (see for example a later example in HSM inv. 48701) though the design of the rete becomes increasinly more intricate in the Mughal world, featuring more star pointers and assuming a nearly symmetrical aspect. The result is that those astrolabes appear more elaborate, a tendency that increases throughout the 1600s. | ||||||||||
