MS Buxton 6. Printed pamphlet by Charles Babbage

Inventory Number: 16088
Object Type: Archive
EAD Extent: Printed pamphlet, 32 pages, no covers, sewn
EAD Scope and Content: Printed pamphlet, Charles Babbage, 'A Chapter on Street Nuisances', 3rd edition, 1864 (‘Extracted from “Passages in[sic] the Life of a Philosopher.” ’). P. 2 consists of a title page, quasi advertisement, for the book 'Passages from the Life of a Philosopher', headed ‘In a few days will be published’. Pp. 3-28 are ‘Observations on Street Nuisances’. Pp. 29-32 consist of the ‘List of Mr. Babbage’s Printed Papers’ (exactly as in 'Passages', pp. 494-496). This pamphlet, representing chapter XXVI, was published prior to publication of the full book, in connection with Babbage’s campaign for regulation of street musicians and performers. ‘Babbage’s Bill’ was passed by Parliament in the same year. The pamphlet was originally issued by John Murray, though in the event Murray refused to publish the full book and it was issued by Longman, the publisher of this ‘third edition’ of the pamphlet. It is not in Babbage’s bibliography (though 'Passages' and the never completed ‘History of the Analytical Engine’ are the final two items).
