English MICROSCOPE SLIDES
c.1704.

Ivory, glass & brass; with pasteboard case. These slides are similar to those illustrated with Wilson's pocket microscope on a plate in the article 'Microscope', in John Harris', Lexicon Technicum ... (5th ed., London 1736) and which were presumably sold with the microscope. The slides shown here belong with the Wilson microscope also shown, or with another microscope (now missing) of the Orrery Collection.

There are nine slides; seven with three holes and prepared with specimens, two with two holes and unprepared. The prepared slides are probably some of the earliest microscope preparations still.

[Orrery Collection, ?no. 39]
