English ORRERY
early 19th century

Brass and ivory; the gores of the globe were printed from an engraved plate, coloured by hand and lacquered. Signed, 'W. & S. Jones, No 30 Holborn London'; not dated. The globe is unsigned, and inscribed, 'A Correct GLOBE with the new Discoveries'. This instrument has three sets of fittings designed to show the planets as far as Uranus with their satellites, the diurnal motion of the Earth and Moon, eclipses of the Moon and nodes of the Moon's orbit. The movements involving the motions of the Earth and Moon relative to each other and to the Sun are demonstrated by means of wheelwork.
