'The Compleat Orrery'
Tradition and innovation are here combined in a single astronomical instrument. Within an armillary sphere Z long used to represent the celestial circles of an earth-centred cosmos Z is a more novel device, an orrery. Developed at the beginning of the 18th century, the orrery provides a geared, mechanical demonstration of the motions of the Copernican sun-centred solar system.
