German ASTROLABE
probably late 15th century
Paper and vellum. Signed, on an attached sheet, "Hanns Herghamer. 1.4.9.2."
The rete consists only of the ecliptic. The lines of the 12 astrological houses are marked within a circular scale of equal hours. The projection is that known as the southern projection; most astrolabes are made according to the northern projection.
This astrolabe was originally stuck between the fly-leaf and the cover of a copy, in its original contemporary stamped leather binding, of Johannes Angelus, Astrolabium, Augsburg, 1488, from the library of Prince Liechtenstein.
Acquired, in 1954, for the Lewis Evans Collection
