Italian QUADRANT
Late 16th century

Brass. Signed, 'QVADRANS PLANISPHAERII GENERALIS IO. ANTONII MAGINI'; undated. There is an unidentified Italian coat-of-arms on the front of the instrument.

On the front is a quadrant sundial of the Profatius type (quadrans novus), incorporating a form of the horizontale catholicum, or tablet of horizons, as found on some astrolabes. The index arm on this side of the instrument is engraved with declination scales.

On the back is the projection of the celestial sphere known as the astrolabum catholicum of Gemma Frisius, adapted so as to occupy a quarter of a circle.
