Physics Glassware Exhibition, Basement Gallery, 2001-2: 'Geissler tube on foot'

Geissler tube on foot

Geissler's breakthrough was the technique of sealing the platinum electrodes in the glass. Exotic tubes were manufactured for popular consumption. The green colour is uranium glass which gave striking effects. Prominent researchers such as Plücker, Hittorf and Crookes had tubes named after them. These early vacuum tubes led to the light bulb, the x-ray tube, the oscilloscope, and even to the radio valve.
