The clockwork astrolabe

Astronomical clockwork was highly prized in Renaissance Europe. This is a late example from the tradition which incorporates a rete on one of its dials, along with indexes for the sun and moon. Whereas the rete on an astrolabe has to be turned by hand to represent the daily motion of the stars, here it is rotated by the clock mechanism.
