WATCH BY THOMAS EARNSHAW, London, c.1810
It uses the duplex escapement characteristic of the more accurate and expensive watches of this period, invention of which was claimed by several watchmakers, as Earnshaw does in the inscription on this example. He was also one of those who claimed a share in the honours for solving the longitude problem, as the detent escapement, which he certainly invented, became the standard form in commercially manufactured chronometers.
