On the level
Levelling instruments come in a range of forms. When the brass bob of [1] hangs precisely over its base point, the three feet are level. Hanging levels are suspended from a line; the essential plumb bob of [2] is now missing. A line and weight indicate the vertical, which is at right angles to the horizontal. A spirit level [3] indicates the horizontal directly, when the bubble comes to rest in the middle of the liquid-filled glass tube.
