French ASTRONOMICAL COMPENDIUM
c.1590

Gilt brass and silver. Signed, "Philipus Danfrie Fecit"; undated.

Includes:
1. A combined universal equinoctial dial and nocturnal for equal and Italian hours. To the index-arm of the nocturnal are hinged the ends of a semi-circular ring, which is used as a gnomon.

2. A table giving the latitudes of 32 places.

3. A compass, around which are engraved the Italian and French names of the winds. There is also a latitude-scale (0°-75°) for use with the equinoctial dial.

4. An alidade, with folding sights, moving over a circular scale of degrees for taking altitudes. Within the lower half of the scale of degrees is a shadow-square; in the upper half, a diagram of unequal hours and a coat-of-arms.
