German SQUARE, COMPASS, PLUMB-LEVEL and HORIZONTAL DIAL
1619

Gilt brass. Signed, "Joachim Deuerlin Fecit Anno: 1619".

The scales on the arms of the instrument are divided into 70 and 249 units respectively, the longer arm having a sliding index. At the junction of the arms is a box containing a compass whose circular scale has 200 divisions. Inside the cover of the compass is a horizontal sundial for latitude 51° (the gnomon is a replacement). On top of the cover are a Zodiac/calendar scale and a lunar volvelle and aspectarium. The instrument is decorated with very fine ornamental engraving, some of which is very deeply cut.
