Decorative devices
Many decorative techniques were applied to enhance the appearance of instruments, from enamelling [2] to painting [6]. The effect of gilding is particularly apparent from the now patchy surface of [1]. Engraved images could invoke familiar stories such as the fall of Icarus, and thus deliver moral lessons [4].
