Brass, steel, etc. Signed, "Made by Tho Wright Instrument maker to his Royal Highness the PRINCE 1724".

At the side is a micrometer screw adjustment of the telescope and spirit level.

With separate tripod head with ball socket joint.

Formerly the property of John Thompson, of Witherby, Leicestershire, who was born on 1 March 1722 and died on 25 February 1783. He and his sons, Ralph and Samuel, were trained professional surveyors. Thompson's instruments remained in the family until 1932 when the collection, an important example of the instrumental outfit of a practical surveyor of the 18th century, was purchased by the Friends of the Old Ashmolean from Mrs Alkin of Witherby, and presented to this Museum.
