Decorative devices
Early drawing instruments could combine the decorative with the practical. The instruments and casket of [1] are covered in fine gold and silver damascene work. The original surfaces of [2] carry scrolling foliage etched by acid (the undecorated arc is a replacement). Although much more plain, the later compasses [3] still retain some decoration, especially on the wing screws.
