COMPASSES of unknown origin
17th century
Brass and polished steel. Unsigned and undated, perhaps of French or Italian make.
Of massive construction, with finely cut mouldings and engraved decoration. The drawing-pen is detachable and can be replaced by another point. The arms of the compasses are adjusted by means of a wing-nut fixed in one of the arms and mounted so as to be free to rotate. This wing-nut moves along a threaded arc (90°) of steel attached to the other arm.
