Gilt brass with polished steel points and blued-steel retaining screws.
Signed, "+ C + T + M + [i.e. Christoph Trechsler Mechanicus]"; dated, "+ 1604+"; with the initials "I P M".
One of the points is detachable, so that a drawing pen could be substituted. The slotted arc, which allows the arms to be locked at any angle, is a replacement. The decorative pattern on the arms has been etched with acid, and not engraved as is more common.
