English POCKET GLOBE
Between 1760 and c.1800
Terrestrial globe of plaster and lacquered paper gores printed from an engraved plate and coloured by hand, in fish-skin covered case with brass catches and hinges of which the interior is lined with the gores of a celestial globe. The globe and case differ from the previous one (C. 708) only in the thickness of the case and the colouring.
Owned and used by Augustus Bergh (1778-1864), master mariner, ship owner, and writer.
Presented by his great-great-grandson Rowland Bergh Esq., in memory of his wife Mrs Mavis Bergh.
